KEEP YOUR PET SAFE
Unfortunately, keeping you cat or dog on your property does not automatically insure its safety. Hazards lurk, so make the effort to pet-proof your home and surroundings. That interesting green pool of antifreeze on the driveway is enticing for your dog or cat, but it can be a deadly drink. Even a small lick may be enough to cause illness or death. Other potential dangers include some kinds of house plants, pesticides, medications and even some human foods. A substance called theobromine found in chocolate is poisonous to dogs and can result in epileptic seizures, cardiac irregularity and irritation to the intestinal tract, internal bleeding and other disorders. Death can result. Nuts should also be on your restricted list of pet treats. Walnuts are poisonous to dogs. The high phosphorous content in most nuts is believed to lead to bladder stones, so avoid feeding nuts of any kind to your canine. Even some common table scraps may be hazardous to your pet's health. Onions, particularly raw onions, have been shown to trigger hemolytic anemia in dogs. Natural chemicals found in green sprouts and green skins of potatoes can also be troublesome for dogs (people, too!), although this is relatively rare. On the other hand, cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs and are actually quite nutritious and digestible.
To be on the safe side, feed your pet only pet food, and you should not have to worry
about food poisoning.
