WAILAPA ESTATE KONA COFFEE

    Established in the late 1920s, Kona's Wailapa Estate comprises approximately 12.5 acres of prime Kona Coffee growing land located at an altitude ranging from 1400 to 2000 feet. The name Wailapa means "water-ridge," and the farm is located in the area of the Kona Coffee belt that receives the highest amount of annual rainfall. Wailapa Estate averages a yearly crop of 850 pounds of Kona Coffee that is naturally cultivated and processed. No herbicides, pesticides or fungicides are used. The "cherries" are allowed to ripen on the tree and thus a natural maturing occurs without any interruption. After the cherries are picked, they are washed, sun dried and shipped to us for roasting.     First introduced in 1825 from Brazil, coffee trees have flourished in Hawaii's near perfect soil and weather conditions. While Kona coffee is known as the most famous variety of Hawaiian Coffee, the island of Kauai was chosen more than 150 years ago as the site of Hawaii's first Coffee plantation. Kauai is home to the largest Coffee plantation in the United States. With more than 4,000 acres of Coffee trees spreading over miles of Kauai's richest farm land, the Koloa Estate produces the choicest beans, rich in flavor and smooth in taste and texture. The warm Pacific sun, rich volcanic earth and abundant mountain water combine to create perfect conditions for growing great Coffee. Located in Eleele, nestled between the calm ocean waters and the soaring central peaks of the island, the Koala Estate produces millions of pounds of Coffee in Kauai's ideal climate.

PEABERY "THE ROUND BEAN"

    Approximately 94% of all Kona Coffee flowers are double-pollinated. As a result, two flat sided Kona Coffee beans develop in a round pericarp. The remaining 6% are singularly pollinated, developing only one oval shaped Kona Coffee bean. In the English speaking coffee world, these rare single Kona Coffee beans are called "Peaberry".

    Many experienced Kona Coffee connoisseurs claim the Kona Peaberry to be superior to its flat sided siblings. The fortunate single Kona Coffee Peaberry bean matures with the nutrient flow intended for two complete coffee beans. Thus Kona Coffee Peaberry has been found to have a higher oil content than more common Kona Coffee beans, as well as an exceptional blend of essential minerals.

    MAUI COFFEE ROASTERS has discovered that the Kona Coffee Peaberry roundness offers an additional advantage. Typical flat sided Kona Coffee beans heat up somewhat unevenly during roasting. The edges of flat beans achieve a higher temperature faster, thus a totally uniform roast is difficult to achieve. The spherical shape of the Kona Coffee Peaberry bean leaves no such exposed edges, allowing for the even distributions of heat throughout.
